Field of activity: Graduated from the Faculty of Turkish Language and Literature at Istanbul University (September 1968). He had been working at this faculty for 44 years as leading researcher (January 1970), then a senior lecturer (January 1976), associate professor (June 1982), Professor (October 1989), Professor (August 1996). In August 2013 he retired. In 1966-2014 he published in domestic and foreign academic journals more than 50 books and over 435 research papers in German, French, English, Kyrgyz, Russian and Japanese languages, dedicated to the Turkic language and Turkic culture, in particular, linguistics, literature, history, art, music and folklore of Old Turkic, Uighur, Karakhanid, Kypchak, Chagatai, Early Osman periods, also to modern Uighur language.
He took part and made reports in 180 national and international congresses, conferences, symposiums, colloquiums, scientific meetings and seminars. He taught and conducted research, was temporal and permanent member, and also was a member of the Plenipotentiary Council in the following scientific educational institutions: Institute of Turkic Studies (1970), Foundation of Turkish Literature (1972), Institute for the Study of Turkish culture (1976), Turkish Linguistic Society (1983), Turkish Society of History of medicine (1985), Turkish Foundation for the protection of monuments and the environment (TAÇ 1987). He was a member of the Council of International scientific relations at the office of rector of Istanbul University (1985-2005), served as Director of Institute of Turkic Studies at the office of rector of Istanbul University (1996-2009). He is a permanent member of the PIAC (Permanent International Altaic Conference 1972), DMG (German Oriental Society, 1979), SUA (Societas Uralo-Altaica, 1980), CASA (Central Asian Studies Association, 1988), an honorary member of the G.Ibragimov Institute of Language and Literature of Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tatarstan and the Alexander Csoma de Körös Institute.
