Old Turks began to adopt Islam from the time of the Karakhanids dynasty (960), so the Turkic peoples of Karakhanids began to read the Quran and religious books in Arabic and started to use the Arabic alphabet for writing. It coincides with the period of the Muslim Renaissance (8-13th centuries). Thus, in the late centuries, the use of the Arabic script by the Turkic people expanded and thousands of works were written.

Arabic language and Islamic culture began to spread, and the Turks began to use in their state official documents the Turkic medieval writing based on the Arabic script. Turkic Islamic scholars had perfectly adapted this script to the medieval Turkic language. This script was used throughout the Turkic world for a long time.

The texts written with this script were called "common Turkic writing," "Chagatai Writing", "Kipchak Writing", "Qadym Writing".
